Kubota started making the shirts because her son was slim and had trouble fitting into store-bought clothes. She told Mashable that she started adding cats to the shirts after her son requested it.

"He is a cat lover and has a lot of cute cat photographs [from] the internet [on his computer]," she wrote to Mashable.

When a photo of one of her creations started going viral online, she opened an Etsy shop where she would custom-make orders. Kubota said she typically sold the shirts on Etsy for about $320.

Kubota no longer sells the customized garments via Etsy, but she does still make them – with a waitlist of about two years.

Her book, which features photos of many of her creations, is available on Amazon.
