17 pop culture moments that were just too much in 2017

关于我们 2024-09-22 01:00:31 737

2017 tested us in many ways. In the rare moments that didn't push our endurance for pain and bs, we tested our capacity to experience joy and witness something good. A hot celeb holds a puppy? Nope. A beloved TV character makes an emotional speech? Nope! Anything on This Is Us? NOPE NOPE NOPE.

For those moments when pop culture was almost too good to withstand, we have made a list. Good bye, 2017. You had your moments.

1. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's first TV interview

Love is real, apparently! The freshly engaged and infectiously happy couple did a 20-minute interview with the BBC and it was so good and pure that I had to watch it in pieces for fear of exploding with joy and affection. It's all too much!

2. Dev Patel and Sunny Pawar at every awards show

Mashable ImageGet this out of here!Credit:

Arguably the first son and dad of a year that would be full of them, Patel and Pawar were the catnip of Oscar season. They knew what they were doing – at least Patel did, picking up the child actor who played him on every red carpet and holding the kid up to microphones to give his interviews in Hindi and introduce Lionin the Best Picture race. Not that it matters, but days after the Oscars it was revealed that Patel has a girlfriend. Rude.

3. Laura tilts the cross in Logan

The X-Men movie that wasn't an X-Men movie was viscerally violent, riddled with expletives, and ended with the death of our only character constant since 2000. After Laura (Dafne Keene) buries her biological father, she pauses for a moment at his gravesite, contemplating the roughly hewn cross that adorns it. She pulls the two intertwined branches from the earth and makes one simple, monumental gesture: She tilts them. The cross becomes an X marking the last of the X-Men, and we join in her tribute.

4. The Westerosi Avengers

Game of Thronesgave us a lot to love in "Beyond the Wall," from white walker battle to dragon fire to some semblance of sexual tension between Jon and Daenerys. But all of that pales compared to the episode's lighter, simpler moments, which included the "Magnificent Seven" – Jon, Jorah, Gendry, Beric, Thoros, Tormund, and the Hound – traipsing through the snow like they were in some kind of medieval fantasy western. Remember when Tormund learned the word "dick?" Or when Gendry wouldn't stop whinging? These are the times they'll all look back on fondly when the cold death of winter sets in permanently.

5. Milo Ventimiglia talking to his kids on This Is Us

Mashable Image

This show can elicit several "NOPE"s during any given episode, so we broadened the specificity on this one. Pretty much any scene of Papa Pearson and the kids (all ages) is too much to bear – special mentions include the pushups with Randall, sneaking up on Rebecca in the maternity ward, and doing the moonwalk on Halloween (how DARE you, sir). This is...too much.

6. The Thor: Ragnarokpress tour

We knew Chris Hemsworth is attractive, charming, and secretly hilarious, but how dare he work with a director cut of the same cloth? How dare he bring out the fun side of Mark Ruffalo? How dare they put him on screen with Jeff freaking Goldblum? Ragnarokwas more entertaining than it had any right to be, and so were the weeks leading up to it as the cast and directors charmed us all into buying many a ticket.

7. Michael B. Jordan's "73 Questions"

Did he just kiss his mom? He owns a Killmonger hoodie?? He's okay with nude scenes??? I HAVE PASSED OUT.

8. Armie Hammer dancing in Call Me By Your Name

Hammer is open about the fact that he's not a dancer and had no desire to display his talents – or lackthereof – in Luca Guadagnino's film. But that self-conscious yet strivingly aloof jive charmed something in audiences; the clip of Hammer dancing went viral long before the movie's wide release, or even it's limited run. @armiedancingto was suspended on Twitter, but we'll always have the memories...and our clumsy homemade attempts.

9. The elevator scene onCrazy Ex-Girlfriend

Rebecca and Nathaniel get stuck in an elevator with no one but each other and their sexual tension, courtesy of the Santa Ana Winds. Their natural chemistry leads to talking, bickering, and eventually bonding over Harry Potter, among other things, which made this reporter gasp with the impunity of it all. Spoiler alert: They make out. And who could blame them?

10. Tom Holland on Lip Sync Battle

Zendaya's “24k Magic” would've been a surefire win on Lip Sync Battle– against anyone besides Spider-Man: Homecomingcostar Tom Holland. Holland did a perfectly charming "Singing in the Rain" tribute before pop, lock, and dropping it to Rihanna's "Umbrella" while wearing a leather bustier.

11. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone trying to wreck you (again)

Mashable ImageWHAT COULD THEY BE TALKING ABOUT THAT'S SO FUNNY SHE'S SO FUNNY HE CAN'T STOP LAUGHING HA HA NO ONE WILL EVER MAKE YOU FEEL THIS WAYCredit: Invision/AP/REX/Shutterstock

The worst thing about it not being 2012 anymore is obviously that these two aren't a couple (probably). They're on a break or have moved on or something, but then they hung out at the Governor's Awards in Los Angeles so maybe love is real???

Listen I'm not saying I mentally wrote a fanfic in which they spotted each other from across the Dolby theater while she won her Oscar for La La Land, but also, how could I not? How dare they even speak anymore and not warn us, and how dare Shutterstock host these images without doing the same.

12. These photos of Joe Keery in GQ

Steve Harrington was an MVP in Stranger ThingsSeason 1, and he rose to all-star status in Stranger Things 2. Steve was a mom, a dad, our son, our husband – we don't make the rules, this is just how it is! And none of that would be possible without Keery, with his natural knack for balancing humor and drama, and probably a couple puffs of Farrah Fawcett spray.

13. Little Mateo talks to Adam on Jane the Virgin

Jane the Virginplayed all kinds of awful games with our hearts this year, including the three-year time jump and the heartbreaking death that prompted it (#TeamMichaelForever). 28-year-old Jane's son tells new (slash old) beau Adam that his mom cried for a long time after Michael died, and that he didn't want her to feel that way again.

"Don't hurt her feelings and don't die, okay?" says Mateo.

14. Gal Gadot meets a young Wonder Woman

Gadot met young warrior Ashley at San Diego Comic Con, where she appeared with the rest of the cast of Justice League. The little girl in Wonder Woman cosplay starts to cry upon meeting her hero, but Gadot takes her hands and comforts her.

"There's no reason to cry anymore, all right?" she says. "Here we are together."

15. "Statistics" with Timothée Chalamet

Our newest pseudo-teen heartthrob courtesy of Ladybirdand Call Me By Your Namehas always been a star, as evidenced by immortal videos of raps he made in high school. Here's to Timmy T's illustrious future career, and to never having to actually take a statistics class again.

Listen, you can't just reunite Adam Scott and Amy Poehler at random after they played one of the best couple's in television history on Parks and Recreation. And Scott played Benas in Ben Wyatt(also Ben, Bradley Cooper's character, who apparently got facial reconstruction surgery since Cooper was unavailable for filming). Tell me this isn't a picture of Leslie and Ben at a costume party in a Pawnee park. IT IS, ISN'T IT?

17. This video of Sushant Singh Rajput

You don't have to know who he is to appreciate the Bollywood actor's criminally smooth moves as he rehearses for a song in the movie Raabta. Rajput has led a few films, none of them blockbuster romances, but the video shows that he and his trainers are taking his future as a leading man seriously. Raabtawasn't particularly successful, but these moves sure were.

Oh, 2017. You were good sometimes. Maybe even too good.
